April 19, 2024Where to celebrate Minnesota’s first fully legal 4/20
Minnesota is gearing up for its first fully legal 4/20, after becoming the 23rd state to legalize recreational cannabis in August 2023. The energy is high, hehe, with bars, breweries, and venues around the Cities planning cannabis-infused parties to celebrate the moment — but there’s only so much you can fit in one day. Here’s a pocket guide to the metro’s funkiest, most promising 4/20 events planned for this weekend.
Hit up Record Store Day at the Electric Fetus
First things first, Record Store Day coincides with 4/20 this year, and Electric Fetus is hosting a lineup of DJs (Transmission’s Jake Rudh, Kenna & Yonci of KFAI, Tricky Miki, A.J. Hilton of WCCO-TV, and Kerry Alexander and Chris Hoge of Bad Bad Hats), plus an acoustic set from local band Durry. Even better, the Dabbler Depot will be providing free doughnuts and coffee to queueing customers and selling THC seltzers and edibles starting at 8 a.m.; El Burrito Mercado’s food truck will be serving food from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. If you’re getting in line for signed records, get there early. The Electric Fetus will be open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Ride the CannaBus
The best way to hit the Cities’ many 4/20 events is to catch a ride on the CannaBus, coordinated by local event series Social AF. A ticket gets you a spot on a literal bus tour to Maharaja’s for a coffee wake and bake, Dabbler Depot for a “Brunch + Grow Seminar,” and a number of other breweries, restaurants, and venues all hosting 4/20 events. You can choose a full-day ticket, or a half-day for the morning or the afternoon; a self-guided itinerary is also available. Head here for more details.
Catch Jesse Ventura at the Hook & Ladder
This is your chance to get the scoop on former Minnesota governor Jesse Ventura’s new edible line, Jesse Ventura Farms, for which he’s partnered with Brooklyn Park’s Retro Bakery. The Hook & Ladder is celebrating the launch with live music and performances, pop-ups, food trucks, and games, plus a toking area. Attendance is free but likely to fill up, so register in advance.
Eat and shop on Lake Street
Lake Street’s Buds Seed & Supply is hosting a maker’s market from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m., offering tastings of beverages and edibles, pop-ups from local artists, a vintage clothing sale, and food from Habanero Taco Truck. Buds is offering 10 to 15 percent off storewide, too, so it’s a good time to stock up.
Check out Hi Flora’s “smoke sesh” event
Local cannabis-infused restaurant and temperance bar Hi Flora, always a great spot for THC-infused cocktails, is hosting a 4/20 celebration from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Find the full details here (and tickets here), but expect brunch, vendors, and an afternoon-to-evening smoke sesh with bong rentals, blunt classes, munchies, hemp leaf pizza, and more.
Take a growing class at Dabbler Depot
Craft liquor store Dabbler Depot is opening a new THC-focused location, Seed & Sesh, on St. Paul’s Payne Avenue, just in time for 4/20. Swing by the grand opening weekend (Friday 2 p.m. to 8 p.m.; Saturday 12 p.m. to 6 p.m.; Sunday 12 p.m. to 6 p.m.) for vendor expos and classes on a number of topics, from the science of cannabis to germination.
Head to a brewery or restaurant party
A bunch of local breweries and restaurants are hosting 4/20 celebrations, so take your pick: Minneapolis Cider Co is combining 4/20 and Earth Day with a river cleanup; Urban Growler is offering discounts on its newly released THC four-packs; Modist is celebrating its eight-year anniversary; Nicollet Diner is doing live music and games; Potshotz is celebrating with food, bingo, and infused drinks.
